New rules for Council adverts will damage local newspapers, says Falkirk East MSP Cathy Peattie.
“The Scottish Government is consulting on plans to allow local authorities to advertise public notices online. Favouring online advertising over notices in local newspapers will take vital revenue away from an industry which is already facing significant challenges.
“And while many people are now online, this move would exclude others. Local newspapers are still our most socially inclusive local media. The Scottish Government must rethink these proposals to avoid irreversibly damaging local papers, which are important employers in communities across Scotland and a vital part of the media spectrum.”
Cathy, who is the Convener of the Scottish Parliament Cross Party Group on Culture and Media, tabled a motion earlier this year highlighting the problems that local newspapers are facing.
“If the SNP are committed to supporting the newspaper industry, then they must pull back from these damaging plans. I encourage anyone who values their local newspapers to respond to the consultation before 12 February 2010, either online, or by contacting my office for a copy.”
