Cathy helps force climbdown on fees for fundraising

Falkirk East MSP Cathy Peattie put the Cabinet Secretary for Justice on the spot regarding his plans to remove the exemption from licence fees for fundraising events. Speaking in the Scottish Parliament on the last day of sitting before the Christmas recess, Cathy said that this would be a result of the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Bill and could mean that local organisations would have to pay £200 to hold their events.

The Cabinet Secretary for Justice, Kenny MacAskill, acknowledged the concerns that the bill would impact on fundraising events, and said that the Government will lodge amendments to the bill to retain the current exemptions for charitable and other groups.

Welcoming the Government retreat in response to her questions, Cathy said: “Given that the average fee is about £200, and that many hall incomes are around £3,000 or less, I am pleased that the Scottish Government has seen sense and is backing down on this proposal.”
