Central police face massive cuts

The proposed cuts in police officers and civilian staff are extremely concerning, says Falkirk East MSP Cathy Peattie.

Central Scotland Police has revealed that in one planned scenario it could cut 194 police officers and 180 civilian staff as the force strives to save £11.6m by 2015 – 23% of the current number of police officers and 47% of civilian staff.

“With cuts this severe, I am worried that public safety could be jeopardised. It certainly won’t be possible to maintain anything like the current level and style of policing.”

“Police budgets have been under increasing pressure over the last three years, and despite the Scottish Government being warned about this by senior officers over the last year or more, it has failed to address the problem.

“Cuts in support staff will inevitably mean those police officers who remain will spend less time on the beat.”

Cathy is to meet Chief Constable Kevin Smith to discuss the looming crisis.
